A New Beginning

The Everyday Citizen has been broken for a while. It took migrating to a new host and a ton of time with FTP and the file manager to get it back online, but here we are! I am getting over major surgery which occurred Jan 3rd in which I lost 18 inches of colon and gained this cute little bag tied to my waist that I now do my biness in. Oh, joy! But at least it isn’t permanent. I will have to just learn to live with it for now…

There is much to talk about. Between Congress and the Prez, the proverbial shit has hit the fan. Having my own thoughts on the sequester, I will post soon when feeling a bit more rational. Although I have voted for Obama in the past two elections, it is this in the latest of bullshit to come down from the hill that gives me pause, which I have not felt before. We shall see..

I’m Back…

Time and circumstances affect us all. I lost my job in February, and as a disabled Viet Nam  vet that is legally blind, I find getting a new job in this economy and political upheaval damn near impossible. If not for my wife and her two successful businesses, I would be livin’ in a cardboard box down by the river. (Not exactly how I want to word it, but we must be PC, mustn’t we?) I was very sick last year, and the illness and the meds provided to me put me in a world of hurt, and I am now finally on the mend. I hope it continues…

I have a lot to say. This election year gives a old curmdgeon like me much fodder to chew on and use to spread hate and discontent amongst the troops. I have never seen such a fucked up bunch of losers come out of the Republican party as I am seeing now. Time to make some hay while the sun shines…

Peace,

Charlie~

Homeland Security – Run For The Border

I have been following with great interest the story of Andrew Speaker, the guy that crossed a lot of international borders, even though knowing he was a tuberculosis carrier. Speaker, a lawyer, was aware of his condition, yet chose to make several international flights, and then drove by car from Montreal to the US. He was challenged at the border, but the agent allowed him to pass, stating that “he didn’t look sick.” This, after international warnings to be on the lookout for this man, and to detain him if found traveling.

Mr. Speaker’s form of TB is a very drug resistant strain. He was aware he had the disease, yet chose to fly abroad, get married, and go on honeymoon, even though he had to be aware that he was risking the lives of others. I am really thrilled that this man was so responsible. Obviously, his personal life was more important to him than the lives of others. I find it ironical that he is a personal injury lawyer…

Last night on the NBC news, I learned that his new father in law, Robert C. Cooksey, is none other than a microbiologist, who works for the CDC, and whose specialty is tuberculosis. What are the odds of this happening? Though aware of Speaker’s condition, he did nothing when he knew that his new son in law was going on a world traveling journey. His bad…

Homeland Security is investigating. Bully for them. There is nothing like locking the barn door after the horse is stolen. Here is my concern. We can all learn from this, I think. Here we have a prominent lawyer, who’s FIL is a microbiologist specializing in TB, who crosses not one but several international borders carrying a virulent form of tuberculosis. Even though alerts had been posted to detain him if possible, he was allowed to cross the border at Lake Champlain into New York, even after the border agent had run him through the computer and knew of his disease. Just because he “didn’t look sick.” Anyone remember Typhoid Mary?

I guess my whole point of this rant is the fact that if someone such as Speaker can travel at will carrying a deadly disease, even though people are aware, then what about a terrorist group? What is to stop them from developing a strain of some innocuous disease that could decimate entire populations, and having one of their insane followers inoculated with the disease and then put him on a plane? Remember, these cats are the ones who think it is glorious to die via suicide bombing. Just think about all those virgins! What’s a little disease worth?

We believe we are safe, when in reality we are open to attacks on so many fronts that it should keep us awake at night. We are safe from no one who is bent on taking us on and eliminating as many of us as possible. We are the victims of circumstance, and it is only a matter of time before this happens on American soil. It is very believable, very doable, and we certainly will not be protected by Homeland Security. What are we to do? Live with it, I guess…

Drive on…
